Description

This Black History Month the Evesham Human Rights Advisory Council is inviting the community to attend a special webinar on Feb. 23 entitled: "Unearthing the Forgotten History – The Story of Evesham”

Learn about the free Black men and women who lived in Evesham Township decades before the start of The Civil War, including those who lived in a small African American community in the Kenilworth section of Evesham with their own school, church and more.

Also hear how Black History in Evesham Township interconnects with several potential stops on the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist Quakers who lived in this area in the 19th century.

Webinar guests will include:

• Patti McGee Colston (with her 99-year-old mother Margaret Truitt McGee) and Damon Truitt – family members featured on NBC’s Roots Less Traveled. Free Black members of the Truitt Family purchased land from Evesham’s historic Evans Family as early as 1834 and would continue to have connections to the Evans family and Cropwell Friends Meeting.

• Alice Andrews – a descendant of the Evans Family, who will speak on Evesham’s historic Quakers and the Evans Family.

• Dolly Marshall – a historical preservation activist with a specific focus on the preservation of historic African American cemeteries. She also serves as a member of the Pinelands Preservation Alliance.

• Paul Schopp – a historian and former executive director of the Camden County Historical Society, who will speak on the history of free Black communities and African Americans living in our area.

"Unearthing the Forgotten History – The Story of Evesham” will be held through Zoom on Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Register for this fascinating look back at Evesham Township’s past and Black History in our community at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_NDw2kf0zS0KiuARkxF-MBw
