EPA Public Notice: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Reviews Cleanup of the Ellis Property Superfund Site

2025 Public Notice Ellis Property 5th five year reviewThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting its fifth five-year review of the Ellis Property Superfund Site, located in Evesham Township, New Jersey. This review seeks to confirm the cleanup plan selected by EPA in the 1992 Record of Decision is protective of protective of people’s health and the environment. The selected cleanup plan included the following components:

  • Excavation of contaminated soil and treatment/disposal at an approved off-site facility.
  • Extraction and treatment of contaminated groundwater from the shallow aquifer underlying the site with the treatment of groundwater in an on-site facility.
  • Disposal of the treated groundwater on the site by reinjection.
  • Implementation of an environmental monitoring program to ensure effectiveness of the remedy.

A summary of the five-year review activities and an evaluation of the protectiveness of the remedy will be included in the upcoming five-year review report. It is anticipated that the five-year review report will be completed by March 2025.

What is an EPA Five-Year Review?

The EPA inspects Superfund sites every five years to ensure that cleanups conducted remain fully protective of people’s health and the environment. These regular reviews, which are required by federal law when contaminants remain at a site, include:

  • Inspecting the site and cleanup technologies;
  • Reviewing monitoring data, operating data, and maintenance records; and,
  • Determining if any new regulatory requirements have been established since EPA’s original cleanup decision was finalized.
